this was pretty easy all in all.
The 'R' and two arrows on plastic reverse tube (for lack of a better name) align to face the rear of the car making the black tab on its bottom face the passenger window. The new shifter knob goes on with the shifting diagram aligned as you would expect.
Now with the new shift know alligned properly on the plastic reverse tube align that diagram properly again and smack down with a rubber mallet - very hard. Don't forget the spring! If you do, use a small thin screwdriver (like for watchmaking) to depress one of the three tabs and pop it back off.
The aftermarket shift knob from genuine saab is very nice, but i really didn't need to get the leather skirt - the old rubber one I had could have been reused and the new one doesn't really offer much aesthetical improvememnt, IMO.
