I am very sorry to her about your mother-in-law.
How many miles is the round trip.... guessing/assuming 4 hours each way for about 400 to 500 miles a week, or the equivelent rate of 21K to 26K miles a year in all of out of town driving. My suggestion: Find weekend rental specials or other discounts (AAA, Costco, etc). Push off all that milage and normal maintence expenses, (tires & rotations, oil changes, trans fluid changes, brakes, spark plugs, etc.), on someone elses car. Additionally, the rental will probably get better gas mileage than what you would buy. So between maintainence and better gas mileage, that could be worth between $25+ a trip alone.
More importantly, your wife will be driving a newer car and if anything goes wrong, she does not have to worry about repairs or being stranded... just calls up the rental company for a swap out. It sounds like she will have enough on her mind during those trips... her car should not be one of them.
