In our family of 5 we have 6 SAAB's. And I have absolutely no reservations with anyone in our family driving any of them anywhere. I keep them all well maintained- and it's defintely a lot of work. Rarely have any of them totally broke down and left anyone stranded. Just in case we all have AAA Gold membership and cell phones. And we live out in the country.
2003 9-5 Aero 85K- wife's she travels 25K / yr
2001 9-3 Viggen 165K and 97 9000 Aero 180K - my cars
1997 9000 Aero 165K 22 yr old son VT college student 200 miles away- way out in the country- though Metric Wrench in St. J VT has rescued him twice.
1999 9-3 SE Convertible 80K 21 yr old daughter- she travels everywhere and puts on 20K . Has had for 1 yr- only issue ELCD purge valve- easy $60 fix
1999 9-3 S 100K my 16 yr old daughter purchased 2 months ago. She drives all over the place and often out til 12:30 AM
My point is I would not worry about the car breaking down if it is well maintained and thoroughly checked before you buy it. SUre Japaense cars are more reliable- but I would NEVER consider owning one. But certainly I am SAAB biased.
