As noted in other posts, the most recent opinions suggest that PVC upgrade #6 does not really address the sludging problem (except maybe in a remote, theoretical way), but rather it corrects a persistent crankcase venting problem which leads to oil being pushed out of the engine at various gaskets such as the front engine cover. But it's something that should be installed (after all, that's why they've gone through six different versions!). Besides, hoses in the PVC system really seem to rot out quickly on these cars, so you'll likely be doing it down the road anyway.
And concerning the sludge issue, it's a really a nasty looking problem, thus all the attention it gets, but the incidences are not all that frequent in spite of the extended "sludging" warranty offered by Saab a while back. It seems to be linked to the climate where the vehicle is driven, the use of the vehicle (short trips vs. long trips), and most important, the type of oil used and the frequency of changes. Use synthetic oil, change it with a frequency to match the driving you do (I personally have settled on 5000 miles) and where you live, and put those worries to bed. It should only be a problem for used car shoppers, not primary owners.
