Thanks to everyone for their input. My wife is a VERY patient lady, and since she handles our finances, she knows better than I that a new car isn't in the budget.
I tried starting the car last night after dark to see if Makis's suggestion (faulty ignition) would lead anywhere. Wouldn't you know it, darn thing started right up so I haven't learned anything.
Several people have suggested a new PCV. Since that's $10 I'll start there. I'll also clean the Automatic Idle Control, although I don't know where to find it.
NoSnaab- Where do I find the AIC?
If these things fail, I'll try the Crankshaft Position Sensor. At $90 that wouldn't be the worst fix. I'd rather do that than replace the fuel pump (which will be last on my list).
I'll try to get to it sometime later this week. Father-in-law is in town and we haven't mentioned any of this to him. If he sees me poking around under the hood he'll just get nervous. We've parked that car and haven't mentioned any problems.
Other suggestions welcome and where do I find the Automatic Idle Control?
Thanks,
Peter
