Seth-
No. I've not yet figured this out. I followed suggestions here and cleaned the throttle body, new air filter, new plugs and it still acts up. We've pretty much stopped driving it- which is a shame because we just put $150 into breaks.
Over the last two weeks, the battery has died twice- once on its own (presumably because we weren't driving it at all the last month) and once because the lights were left on. Next time it fails to start, I'm going to check the battery voltage during cranking. Maybe this is as simple as a bad battery?? Only that doesn't explain (to me) why it would start again after sitting. There was a time when this problem was definitely temperature related but we seem to have spiraled down past that. Now it just doesn't start about half the time. Warm or cold. I would replace the cap/rotor/cables next, but it seems to start up with a little shot of ether which leads me to believe it's getting spark. Because it never gives trouble once running, I don't think it's a fuel pump. Maybe a clogged fuel filter??? I really don't know.
If you've found a solution PLEASE let me know. It almost always happens to my wife because I bike almost everywhere. So debugging it when it actually happens is a bit hard because I'm not usually around it. And of course it almost always starts for me ; )
