We replaced the pump on my son's 1995 900S about a year ago and we chose to drop the tank. The car had been through 12 New England winters so we did have to replace the tank straps and some hose clamps attaching the filler neck, otherwise dropping the tank was not that bad. Getting the spanner nut off the top of the tank and dealing with the fuel line connectors was actually more of a problem. Whichever route you go, follow the other posters' advice and take our time and please work safely around the fuel tank.
