I think it's a combination of maintenance & abuse that determines a tranny's life. In my '90 C900 (5sp manual) I changed over from mineral gear oil to syn gear oil & then to syn motor oil. I was told by everyone (several machanics, including Townsend, & numerous fellow Saabites) that my tranny would fail in less than 20k mi. It's now been more than 100k mi since changing over (250k mi total on the original tranny) & it shifts better than when I bought it 10 yrs ago. It's all documented over on the C900 forum, dating back to 2003.

I also owned a 1999 9³SE automatic for a little over 8 yrs (10/00-12/08). The owner's manual calls for Dexron III, mineral oil based. I changed the ATF at 35k (6/02) with Texaco Havoline Dexron III mineral oil. It looked like crap. I then changed it at 42k (5/03), 50k (5/04), 60k (6/05), 72k (4/06) & 90k (7/07) with Mobil 1 synthetic ATF. The transmission worked perfectly until the car was towed away after being totaled in an accident at 109k (12/08). The details of my changes are posted in this forum, dating back to 2004.

I now own a 2002 9³SE automatic (1/09). The owner's manual calls for Dexron III, mineral oil based. I changed the ATF at 60k (1/09) with generic "Dex III" mineral oil. It looked like crap. A week later I changed it with generic "Dex III" again. It still looked like crap. I then changed it two weeks later (2/09) with Mobil 1 synthetic ATF. So far, so good. It's got almost 69k mi on it & it's still shifting perfectly. I'll do the 2nd syn d&f at 70k mi.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, don't simply change your fluid & walk away. Especially with these cars. If I owned your NG900 auto tranny, here's what I'd do: first, drain & fill with Dex III, drive it a week, then do another drain & fill with Dex III. That'll give you 75% new Dex III fluid before you start with syn ATF. Drive it another week, then do a 3rd drain & fill with M1 Syn ATF. After that final syn d&f, you'll have 50% syn, 38% new Dex III, & 12% old fluid. (Basically, you've just blended your own high-end semi-syn ATF!) At that point you can do your next syn d&f at any interval. I like 10k mi intervals because they're easy to remember. After the 3rd syn D&F get yourself back onto the normal ("severe service") schedule of 30k mi ATF changes.

Of course, there's absolutely no problem with continuing to use mineral-based ATF. However, seeing the way these A/W trannies abuse their fluid, I could now never go more than 10k mi between changes on mineral ATF. Just my opinion, though...
