If you have a manual transmission, then it sounds like your gearshift linkage needs adjustment. Remove the rubber boot and mounting frame around the gearshift lever and locate the alignment hole that is just in front of lever. Pry out the alignment hole cover and try to insert a screw driver or 4mm drill bit (wrap one end with enough tape to keep the bit from falling into the gearbox). If it inserts easily, then the alignment is okay. If it doesn't, then you need to get under the car and loosen the pinch-bolt that connects the linkage to the selector rod that passes through the bulkhead. This will allow you to make the adjustment necessary for the drill bit to slip into the alignment hole.
