Manufacturers put 17" wheels on because people expect big wheels nowadays... and that's because "everyone else is doing it". It's an appearance issue; it's not because they are better in any significant way in performance. This is about sales, not engineering.
Wheel durability is an issue for all of us who live where there's Winter. You simply can't avoid bumps that will damage your wheels. It has nothing to do with running into curbs. Check out how many Viggens have bent wheel issues. It's practically a given with 17" wheels.
Likewise talk to some people who run cars at the track - let me know what they run for wheel sizes. Hint: they run smaller wheels because the extra weight of larger wheels reduces acceleration and increases unsprung weight. Run the numbers, include the difference in tire weight. You lose with 17" wheels.
If you like 17" wheels, go for it. But, don't fool yourself into thinking it's a performance improvement.
