My experience is the throw-out bearing can make a lot of noise for a long time, and still work OK. Silent clutch operation seems to indicate that the T-O bearing is OK.
On a Saab they're the same like lms says, but on a Honda or other kind of car, the slave can be located outside the tranny housing. Then a lever goes in through the bellhousing. The throw-out bearing is right on the center of the clutch, pushing against the spinning center of the pressure-plate.
