Depends on your priorities. Trim level, longevity, safety, MPG, looks, repair costs and etc. When I bought my 1996 900 S a few years ago I was looking for a Honda civic or accord. Here in Vermont I couldn't find a similar Honda that wasn't at least $1,000 more.
My girlfriend's Honda CRV runs like the beater it is at 180,000 miles and she has run it low on oil, low on tranny fluid (which clunks into first) drives it like it was a real 4WD and it takes it and still runs. I've done the usual suspension and exhaust but I'm still impressed.
I think if you are in a place where you have lots of options check out Consumer Report for their top used cars and see what is available. When I bought my Saab I figured that I'd be putting that $1,000 back into the car and I would still have a nice clean car. So far the only things that have failed are the usual stuff like the idler pulley, exhaust, ignition switch and rear brakes. So I feel I've come out a head since I can now repair most things and AAA gets me home. Plus, this forum will save you lots of dough and headaches.
But yes, shop around and look for one that has all the records or was dealer maintained. The dealer would be able to print out all the records.
