I have a 2002 9-3 SE.
While driving a couple weeks ago, the oil light flickered while on the highway, I drove to the next exit (about 1/2 mile) and checked the oil, the level was good, but the engine was knocking (not good). So I had the car towed to a mechanic. The verdict was that the engine was oil starved do to the infamous sludge problem.
Last weekend, i pulled the oil pan, and cleaned the pickup screen which was almost totally clogged (see pic). I also replaced the connecting rod bearings (I assumed, poorly, that this was the problem), none which were in terrible shape, but they had some noticeable scratches, the crankshaft did not appear to be damaged at all.
I put it all back together and fired it up, but the knock is still there. I didn't check the main bearings while I had it apart(doh!). I guess this weekend I am going to rip it back apart and check the main bearings, does anyone have any other ideas what the knocking could be before I spend another weekend replacing the main bearings only to hear the knock again?
I realize this is like asking a doctor for a diagnosis of a rash over the phone but I thought I would give it a try. I took short video of the knocking: youtube.com/watch?v=Qjj-jjyOeTE
Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks.
