I'm not sure it matters in all but the most extreme conditions.
I run 205/55 x 16 in the summer on my 9K and 205/60 x 15 in the winter (Nokian WRs). No issues that I can tell. Would a narrower tire, say a 195/65 be a little better? Maybe, but I've never not been able to get anywhere in really bad weather with the wider tire, even on marginally plowed roads in the mountains.
Am putting 205/65 x 15s my wife's '03 9-5 for this winter. It wears 215/55 x16 in summer.
The way I look at it is that most of the time in winter here in southern NH the roads are NOT snow covered. So a wider tire is better 90% of the time. When it snows, it's only bad for 2-3 days here and there and you really need the snows.
