Sorry, at first I didn't put together this post vs your earlier thread.
I think it's just semantics where the dealer isn't very precise about which sender/sensor he's talking about. I never owned a 97 non-turbo, so I don't know how smart the engine-management is.
Or maybe BOTH sender/sensor are operating correctly, and something causes the engine to actually run too hot. (bad thermostat? plugged radiator?) In that case, the dashboard gauge will (correctly) read high, and the ECU will 'know' about that from it's sensor and it'll affect operation.
