What "inside metal reinforced door handles" are you talking about? The door pulls that you use to open the doors from the inside? I realize they're made of plastic, but I don't see how they could break in normal use unless the mechanism inside the door were binding (or locked). You don't have to apply much force to them to unlatch the doors.
By the way, doesn't your SID unit above the radio have a Distance To Empty function that calculates in real-time how many miles you can drive with the amount of gas you have? I get extremely antsy if mine reads as low as 20 (and as Ron said, that's not a good habit for the health of the fuel pump) but on one occasion it dropped to 0 while I was in the middle of nowhere, searching for a gas station. I still managed to drive a couple more miles until I found one, and promptly filled my tank with 17.7 gallons! Given the range these cars get from a full tank, there is just no reason to habitually run it nearly dry just because you know you can.
