Yes, I tried this on a 1997 2.3 that I used to own. It had been abused before I bought it. In the end, I had to drop the pan to cut the balance chain, but that gave me the opportunity to evaluate the chemtool soak. It did loosen up most of the coked particles on the screen so I would advise a backflush or multiple soaks or poking around with a wire to keep the crud from being re-trapped on the screen.
This method will work if the engine has not gone too far down hill. There is a limit to the amount of crud that can be dissolved and the top end of the engine is not addressed.
I didn't think of it at the time but it would be cool to setup an external pump where you could take the drained fluid and keep washing it through the sump.
