I had A/C trouble 2 years ago, and with a bunch of research and some re-charging, I was able to get it working for another year.
First, Anders (Swedecar) posted a lot if you search about proper charging. The R134a systems require such a small volume of refridgerant, that the only proper way to do it is with a charging system that measures the exact weight the system needs.
Second, you can get it charged properly (I'll use this term loosely), as I was able to do it. I used a single gauge with the charging kit and slowly added refridgerant. I couldn't really do it fast anyhow as the smaller cans get cold almost instantly, and it takes a while for it to charge. I also had the hissing, but it went away after it was charged up. This lasted fine for a year. The root of my problem was the compre$$or which eventually made a horrible grumbling sound and needed to be replaced. The clutch was replaced earlier in the previous year, so I know it wasn't that.
