I wrote last week about a problem in which the TCS OFF, ABS, CEL and Brake lights came on and the consensus seemed to be that I had a bad ABS module and that BBA could rebuild it (~$140) or sell me a re-manufactured unit (~$750) and life would be good. Well, I dropped it at a local Saab indy shop today which confirmed that I needed a new ABS module, but the recommended repair includes a new ABS pump - total cost upwards of $3000. The feedback from the technician is that the pump likely has problems as well (e.g., valves) and since Saab has made many modifications to the module over the years that going with the part from BBA is unlikely to be a long-term solution (he really seemed to doubt BBA's ability on rebuilds except for things like the SID).

Now, the car, a 2001 9-3 SE convertible with 160K miles, is probably worth $5-6K, so there is no way that I am going to drop that kind of money on a repair. At the same time, I cannot sell the car as-is with the dashboard lit like a Xmas tree. My gut is to suck it up, go with BBA rebuilding my ABS module, pay the 3-4 hours of labor and then try to sell the car. It pains me to see this car go, but I cannot be dropping $1000 every six months into this.

Am I missing something here? Should I try for a second opinion? I respect this shop and the technician and have always felt that I was treated well ever since taking my Volvo 850 there 15 years ago.
