That seems consistent with everything that I have read here...just really surprised by the negative reaction that I got from the tech when I asked about this solution. I have worked with him in the past and always had good experiences - not that this necessarily makes a lot of difference, but he has 15+ years working on Saab at both a dealership and this shop and I never felt that I was being oversold or pushed into unnecessary repairs.
Maybe I heard him wrong, but the reason he gave for not being able to drive the car with the module removed is that the pump connections would be open/exposed and all of the brake fluid would be pumped out of the system. Could we be talking about a different part? Is the ABS module connected to the ABS pump? What, if anything, do I risk by taking this to a non-Saab indy shop that has done great work on my other cars? I would assume that any vehicle with ABS has a similar setup.
Based on everyone's feedback I feel comfortable that this is the correct repair and I should make the $400-500 investment with labor so that I can keep this car a little bit longer.
