Hello Folks including Swedecar,
Finally completed the overhaul of my beloved 900 SE. The car now runs great!.
The 900 series has a very unique body design that should be continued.
I hope the new owners of the company can see the merit in doing that.
I got my wife a new VW Passat but she still thinks the Saab gives her greater pleasure in driving.
If the new manufacturer can do the following improvement this Brand name can certainly make a comeback.
1) Add a TDI engine to the series like the VW Jetta.
2) The V6 engine has lubrication problem on the firewall side cylinders.
Oil seems to be deficient on this section resulting in engine failure.
Could be because of the engine tilt. The front cylinders are lower than the rear. Could also be sludge building up inside blocking oil circulation.
3) Reduce the cheap plastics used all around and use a better grade of plastic that will not break down too prematurely especially in the hot climates zone. In the long term it pays for itself. Look at what happen to
Dell. They were a rising star and their business model was even taught at Havard Business school. Their business model like GM was flawed and they are paying for it dearly. I will not be surprise the company will go out of bsiness soon leaving thousands of workers unemployed.
4) Make the product easier for maintenance reducing the labor time for repairs. Those stupid intimidating torx fasteners should be replaced with standard ones.
The timing belt should be replaceable within one hour. The first time I did a replacement it took me three hours for replacement struggling to remove the plastic cover and eventually breaking it. Of course I did not realize you need to remove the tensioner pulley also which is also a pain in the neck to remove in the first place.
Oh yes, stay with stamdard size fasteners e.g 10, 13, 15, 17, etc. Saab uses some 14 16 mm fasteners, strange to me why they did that.
All my suggestions are not drastic, they are simple common sense which many of our business leaders are lacking today.
If the car is user friendly to the customer AND the mechanic, that reputation will sell more cars instead of relying on BS salesmen. At present it is the opposite. I hope the new Saab owners will listen to my advice and change the GM business model which has led it to ruin. Anyway I still love my Saab having owned an 84 Turbo which I had great pleasure driving.
