problem checking oil

Just changed the oil and filter. Put in the specified 4 liters of oil. Started the car and warmed the engine. Shut off engine. Waited 5 min. Checked oil: barely registering on dipstick. Added more. Still barely reigstering. Added more. Same. Now, about a quart and a half later, it appears to just be edging over the bottom bulb. No leaks apparent.
Complicating matters: there are streaks of oil up the dipstick that make it confusing where the actual oil level is. This seems to be the worst dipstick design ever. I can't be confident what level I'm actually checking.
I guess tomorrow I will drain the new oil into a clean pan, figure out how much is in there, then pour it back in. If this is the only way to truly check the oil level, the dipstick becomes pretty useless.
Ideas anyone?
