...especially if you're driving the car right after the oil change without checking the level. I've always heard that on turbocharged engines, it's always recommended to fill the filter, and to do so a few times. You'll find that the filter can soak up 3x it's capacity. I start doing this as I begin my oil change and by the time I'm ready to install the filter it will stay 3/4 full (so you can turn it sideways to install) without soaking up any more oil. This will also ensure that your oil level readings are more accurate after the oil change.
Another method used on the older SAABs was to to disconnect the distributor and remove the fuel pump fuse, then crank for a few seconds. This ensured that everything was well lubricated and pressurized before running.
Whenever you start a car after an oil change, especially when the filter has not been filled, the engine, turbo and most importantly, the oil pump will run dry for a few seconds.
I'm also assuming that your are removing your dipstick, wiping it clean, re-installing and then removing to read. I've seen a few people try to get a reading by just pulling it out when it's freshly been splashed by oil.
