The driver side axle on an automatic is a different length, if I"m not mistaken. Just swapped engines and trannys between an automatic and a manual car.
I bought my rebuilt axle from Advanced Auto a few years ago and it seems just fine to me.
I've never heard about the threads on the axle being a problem. What I do know is that the nut is crimped in a way that makes it a bear to get off but you can reuse it and recrimp it.
I recommend a large breaker bar and a three foot long section of black pipe that fits the bar. Also, shop early for the socket or you'll get stuck with an expensive impact socket. But you do want a deep well socket. I actually could rent you mine. Or sell it really.
Dmitry Platonoff has a nice section on axles too. so check his site out for pointers.
