It is true that you cannot tell the quality of the fluid by the color alone.
I've seen AMSOIL synthetic ATF which was very, very dark, but lab analysis showed the fluid to be suitable for continued use. To the owner, that meant there had been no measureable or significant damage to this point-- and he changed the fluid.
Overfilling may or may not be a problem. At high speeds, overfilling can result in some foaming (somewhat depending on the fluid). Air does not lubricate very well.
A lab test is the best way to find out.
Were it mine, I certainly change the ATF, even if the lab report came back OK. I'd crawl under, drop what comes out of the transmission by pulling the plug, replace an equal amount. Then I'd drive for about 10-15 minutes to mix things, and repeat the process. Depending on what it looked like at that point, I'd probably go through the same thing one more time. If your folks (or you) can't do that, find someone who can do a flush and bite the bullet.
