I gave it a little twist in the tightening direction, then switched over to the rachetting torque wrench, which is much longer than the rachet that I was using, and got the bolt off. I was reluctant to use the torque wrench because it is 1/2" and has a track record of breaking 1/2" to 3/8" adapters.
The housing started leaking coolant as soon as that last bolt was loosening up. I had two rectangular basins under the car ready just for that. The old thermostat came out, and its spring is weak. After placing the new thermostat, and tightening everything up (the most difficult bolt being the one that I should never have taken off. LOL), I took the car for a drive. The engine temperature warms up much quicker now, and it is able to keep the engine temperature indicator in the middle at high way speed (first time since outside temperature dipped below about 60; I stopped driving this car after noticing the problem, so hopefully no harm is done). So all is good. Thanks tons.
