The OG 9-3 has one of the lowest injury loss statistics of all midsized cars of it's era (early 2000s) -- only the 9-5 and Audi A6 are better (and both are larger, so it is not unexpected). "Injury Losses" is the number of injury insurance claims relative to cars on the road, with results corrected to remove demographic factors such as driver age. The 9-3s injury losses are 44% better than average, where 'average' includes all sizes of cars, including very large cars as well as SUVs. In comparison, you are much more likely to be injured in a Lexi ES300 and IS300, and Mercedes C-class of similar era.
No doubt though some of the OG9-3 laboratory crash test results are 'average' rather than great. But the real-world safety of the NG9-3 seems more than respectable for a car of it's era.
