In the midsize class, the OG 9-3 injury losses are better than Passats, Volvos, Audi (A4), Infinitis, Lexus -- not just Fords and Chevys. Drivers of Passats, Volvos etc.. would seem to have a similar demographic profile to Saab drivers. Hence, even if one thinks wealthier drivers are more responsible drivers (I'm not sure that is warranted, btw, but let's go with it as an assumption), it seems that it is the car that is different -- ie. the same driver is less likely to be injured in a Saab than a Passat, S40 or Lexus E300.
I tend to go with the injury loss statistics over the crash test results. I think that crash tests address a narrower range of impacts than the real world and, because the test is so narrowly defined, manufacturers can 'design for the test'.
As an aside.. I vaguely recall a survey in which the average speed of different vehicle makes was measured on the same stretch of road (I think it was in the Boston area but memory may fail). Saabs were at or near the top. Saaber's may not be the most cautious! :-)
