You need to know the date of manufacture of an OG 9-3. Before Dec 1998, the passenger compartment crumpled more easily than anyone would want. SAAB strengthened the A-pillers, and improved to average in the IIHS tests.

While the real world injury stats for the car are above average, as noted before, I wonder if they are truly corrected for demographics. I would go with the crash test results myself as I do think that the personality of the purchaser will influence the frequency of accidents. My own belief is that the demographics of who buys a SAAB are different than those for a Ford or Chevy or other car with similar crash test results. People buy Saabs for safety reasons, are likely to drive a little more responsibly. This is likely too since Saabs are more expensive to buy and to keep. Folks who find that extra cash in their earnings and budgets have to have a bit above average earning skills and the responsible personality that goes along with the extra earning power.
The car is safer in ways other than the frontal offset crash, such as strong seats to protect in rear impacts, a side airbag that protects the head, seat belts that tighten slack on impact, a strong roof structure (witness the moose impact test), and advanced head restraints.
