If you have someone else put in, a used tranny with a warranty will cost the same as another car.
I was in the same boat as you. I found an indy and we swapped out the whole engine and tranny as one and replaced it with one from a car I already had. The point is even with a warranty you don't know how long it will last if you couldn't drive it first.
I'd look for another car that you can either swap over parts and make into a nicer one, you could part out your current one (with patience you could make close to $1,000), or you could write it off.
If you do end up replacing the tranny do use planonoff's site as a guide. And as he does replace the oil pump and the gaskets that you can get at and what not. I think Dmitry put in a tranny from a '99 which supposedly are stronger.
OH WAIT! I'm south of you in Burlington, Vermont. I've got a '96 900S with 130K for $1300 US. It is in very good shape.
It was my '98 900SE that we converted from an auto to manual. The '96 is the better running of my two.
