Window stalls halfway up

Hi all, the passenger window on my convertible Viggen doesn't go up all the way anymore. Switch engages motor, it goes up a few inches, then slows and stalls. A search for window problems here seem to be in 2 categories, glass coming out of track and falling to bottom of the door, and switch failure; I can't seem to find a similar case and solution. I took the panel off, the window seems to be hooked up properly on regulator, nothing seems to be loose and I can't see anything jamming the regulator's mechanism. Any attempt to lift the window by hand either with switch engaged or not does not budge after it has stalled. Would a failed motor still be able to lift it halfway? Is it likely that something is jammed in the gear mechanism and if so is there some likely place I can look? Any ideas welcome, but I'm not much of a mechanic, so little words of one syllable or less would be helpful. Thanks, these window parts are expensive!
