Another possibility is that the rubber gasket on the outside of the door is binding against the window. When it happened on my car the metal strip inside of the rubber strip was rotting away and when rolling up it would pop the window off the track, break the green wheels and bend the window regulator all in random order before I tracked it down.
Was a pisser when traveling cross country going through all the damn toll booths.
