I had a '95SE drop a coil in an ignition cassette back in 2002.
No CEL at all, but car ran really slow. With slightest tip-in of throttle, the turbo pressure would jump much higher than usual, and for the tank of gas I got around 16-18 instead of 30 on the highway.
Here's how I found it:
After driving 5 minutes, turn off car and pop hood. Use a squeegee or water bottle, and drip a few drops of water on the exhaust header near the engine port... At 5 minutes of driving, the header is hot, but not severly so...
For me, I got cylinders 1-3 to instantly steam and evaporate the water. Cylinder 4, the water ran down the header for a while - indicating the cylinder wasn't firing.
I'm not certain, BUT, I think the cylinder would've been hot enough for steam if you were just loosing compression, but the header won't be hot if you've lost spark and not getting ignition of the gas.
If no steam, you're down to spark plug or DIC. Spark plug will be easy to find, DIC, less so obviously.
Good Luck!
