I would be hesitant to a shop that reads the fault codes and then suggest repairs based on that unless they have done some other tests too.
But I assume he have taken a compression test as part of his fault tracing just to rule out any problems inside the engine.
If the car is in fact running on three cylinders at all times, I have a tough time thinking that a crank shaft position sensor could be the culprit.
