Tranny died, 169K miles, what to do?

So, my 96 900's transmission died while in stop and go traffic in NYC yesterday (yes, kind of a nightmare) -- I was having a bit of trouble shifting into fifth, then after being in first for about half an hour, the gear shifter went completely limp, like spaghetti. No resistance at all, and I seemed to be permanently in first gear. I was able to limp off a ramp and AAA towed it to my old mechanic (I don't live here anymore). I had hoped it might be the shift linkage, but he told me I need a new transmission. And also, that he didn't think it was worth doing the work given the other work it needs (front axle, control arms, parking brake).
I am stranded in NYC and trying to figure out what to do with the car. I'm out of work, and he wants $1500 for the tranny job (which I think is not too bad considering), but then there's all the other work it needs which I've been putting off, which is about another $1000-1500. I am sad about my car, but I'm out of work and I'm not convinced it's worth putting all that money into the car, even though I love it. It's convenient for me to have a car, but I could get by without it at the moment (public transport, etc).
What are my options? I hate to just have it towed to a junkyard, but it's hard because I can't just park it either (I'm in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn). I have one or two free tows left from AAA, but towing it to a parking spot doesn't make sense. I would love to sell it to someone who could do the work themselves - the engine is really strong and has never had problems, and it has a brand new clutch cable and the clutch was just checked. But I guess I would need to do that within a couple of days.
Or do I just get it towed to the junkyard :-( and if so, how much would they give me?
Thanks. I am bummed.
