Hi everyone,
Thank you all so much for your help. This morning I went to the garage to see the car for myself. I am planning on towing the car to my old mechanic in CT, who is a Saab specialist I trust (Keal Evans at European Auto in Norwalk).
Ami, the NYC mechanic, showed me the linkage mechanism, and showed how it moved in and out of the transmission in a floppy way without clicking. Then he opened another 900 and showed me how there was resistance and it 'clicked' when coming in and out of the transmission. So, it seems like it IS a mechanical issue, but one that is inside the transmission.
However, I'd still like to have the car out of New York as it's hard to deal with here - and I'm thinking that since European Auto specializes in Saabs they'll have more resources at hand on how to sell the car, preferably to someone who would like to save and drive it.
I'm sad about my old buddy - and still hoping there might be some miracle - but it's starting to sound like it's the end of the line, at least for me.
If anyone has any tips on how to sell the car to someone who wants to fix her up and not scrap her, I'm all ears. The engine has never had trouble, main seals were replaced when I replaced the clutch, and I've taken good care of her (there are a few dents, though).
Thanks.
