Ok,
we have a 3rd car, but that's down right now with a hole in the oil pan, so my backup car is gone - and I need the Saab to get me to work. The Power Steering pump appears to be going... I've had to fill up the reservoir twice in the last 200 miles, fluid sitting on tray below serpentine belt, and passenger wheel is sticky, so pretty sure it's the pump (at an absolute, in that area, will be checking hoses/connections tonight).
Question #1: Is there any substantial risk to driving it that I'll damage other parts of PS system or other? I am ensuring there is no 'groaning' by keeping the reservoir filled. (I understand risk of pump seizing and the serpentine belt issues, I'm meaning other than that one)
I intend to replace the pump, but I've been having poor success recently, and can't just ditch work if I don't successfully repair either over a weekend or in a single evening, so my contingency question is:
Is there a short-belt modification I can use to bypass the PS pump on a temporary basis? Can I drive the car without doing damage to the rack or PS system if bypassed? (I know it will be 'hard' to drive without PS, this is just a contingency plan)
You guys are always pretty nice to us novices out here, so I feel comfortable asking stupid/strange questions... and who knows, it might help somebody else too.
I didn't grow up working on cars, so I only learn about different systems on the car as it breaks for the first time :-)
