After doing a couple of driving schools that included autocross work, I think a smaller car, either RWD or FWD is better than a Saab for autocross unless the Saab is extensively modified--especially lowered and stiffened. Saabs can still do OK, but lack some of the agility needed on most autocross courses these days. A Miata, a 944, an E-30 or E-36 BMW are all much better if you're going RWD; a Mini, GTI, Civic Si or maybe a Mazdaspeed 3 is good with FWD.
I used to autocross when the courses had decent straights and something other than 1st and 2nd gear corners and a well-sorted Saab would have been great, but so many autocrosses today are 1st and 2nd gear events that it a small, really agile car is better, IMO.
I think Saabs are better track cars than autocrossers because of their overall balance of handling, superb torque, and overall stability. On a track a well-sorted Saab can run with some seriously fast cars.
