First, you should do PCV update #6 and drop the pan ASAP. It's a really, really bad idea to run one of these engines a lot of miles without it. That job takes a few hours but requires very little in parts.
That said, try this first: With the engine dead cold (as in sitting overnight) loosen the serp belt by pulling the tensioner forward and locking it in place, then removing the belt from the upper idler pulley. Start the car. See if you hear the sound. If you don't, it's an accessory. If you do, it's an internal engine issue (or maybe turbo issue). Don't run the engine this way for more than a couple minutes as you have no cooling and no charging while doing it.
If you don't feel qualified to do this, find a friend who likes to turn wrenchs and have him help. FYI - you can purchase a "mechanic's stethoscope" to do what John suggested in a little more formal manner. (I bet that's what he uses in the shop :-)
Report back after you know if it's an accessory or the engine.
