Thanks for the input! I successfully released the belt tension using instructions from this helpful site: http://pages.infinit.net/mlbriand/saab/shortbelt/page4.html
As for findings, it´s definitely an accessory issue as the engine is running smoothly with the belt off. To find the culprit I spun and handled each pulley, applying force in various directions in search of play. I also listened and felt for telltale signs of bearings on their way out.
All were fine except the power steering pulley. It can be moved about 3mm inwards (axially) and also makes slight tickings noises when turning by hand. With the belt back on as normal the play is gone, so the bearing must be taking some strain. Interestingly the noise was gone when I then restarted the engine, without time to warm up.
So now I need to change the ps pump. Does anyone know approximately how many hours this is for a regular DIY guy? Are there any good web pages with instructions on how to proceed, or drawings?
I will also drop the pan and do the PCV modification as soon as possible. It's a great car and absolutely worth spending a little to avoid the engine giving up way before its due.
Thanks again,
tuxicated
