you can change how the tire rides without changing the profile... it's possible to just move to a softer sidewall.
Example, my prior tires on my '97 900SE were General Altimax (I think that was the name) tires, had a much softer sidewall, and thus a more compliant ride, while still holding the same profile. I think it was considered a 'touring' tire instead of an 'all-season high performance'. I believe these were still H or V rated as well (maybe just 'z' at 149?).
For me personally, I went the other direction, they were too soft for my tastes, but I enjoy the go-kart feel :)
And as for 'too squishy,' that's all a perception game... Depending on driving habits and conditions you wife drives in, it's all up to the individual person what they like... my personal criteria is I want predictable, I want the car to act the same every time, so I know where the limits are and how the car will act when I get there... we've got 'Dueler' offroad tires on the family suburban, but they always grip even though they're the softest ever tire I've ever owned on any car.
Going up one profile size you're talking less than an inch in difference, I would expect it to be noticable, but probably not night and day difference in a 10 year old family sedan.
