It was quite common on the T5 cars with long cranking when cold due to failing CKP sensor so it is not impossible.
Have even seen it a few times on the T7 cars but as you say, the hot no start is more common for CKP sensor failure.
With the tuning kit installed and the sputtering during acceleration, who knows what could be wrong in this particular case. Maybe the fuel mapp have a glitch that came to life suddenly.
