2002 9-3SE automatic, 135,000 miles
About two months ago I started to notice that the oil fill tube was collecting oily residue. It appears to be coming out from the spring-loaded yellow fill cap. (The outer diameter of the cap is now lightly browned.) I removed the black cosmetic shield & took a look around the throttle body at all of the vacuum lines & PCV lines. Nothing's obviously cracked, split or disconnected. Nothing else seems to have any oil residue collected around it.
I then took off the rubber intake hose from the MAF to the turbo intake plenum, & removed the top of the air cleaner box. I cleaned the MAF & noticed that the PCV line bolted to the top of the turbo plenum had a significant amount of oil residue collected around the inside tube.
I guess I'm wondering why this is just occuring now? We bought the car nearly 5 yrs ago with 60k mi on it (135k now). It's always blown a puff of smoke when heavy turbo boost kicks in, & it's always consumed about 1/2 qt of oil in a 5k mi OCI. There hasn't been any change in operating characteristics that I know of (it's been my wife's car, so I don't drive it with any regularity). It doesn't make any odd sounds (scraping, ticks, ringing, etc) or exhibit any odd driving habits (hesitation, low boost, etc).
I only found the one post linked below regarding oil residue around the fill tube. Besides the cracked piston or (broken?) rings mentioned in that post, is there anything else that might cause this amount of blow-by? I've been using Mobil 1 5W-40 & 10W-40 "High Mileage" (ACEA A3/B4) exclusively, & changing every 5k mi. Even using these more detergent & protective oils, are the rings still susceptable to excessive carbon buildup & sticking?
Thanks for any help!
