"I was under the impression that though the viggen looks remarkably similar it shares very few body panels with the SE which makes the notion of 5 door assembly in Finland a bit of a dramatic undertaking."
Hardly. Everything that makes a Viggen a Viggen is bolt-on over the standard bodywork. Spoilers, skirts (such as they are), bumpers, etc. As I said, the made ALL bodystyles of Viggen: Convertible, 3 door and 5-door.
On top of that, Valmet Automotive is a case study in how to build multiple cars on the SAME production line. And I'm not talking about different models of the same car.
When I was there in 2001, and took the tour, they had both Saabs, AND Porsche Boxsters intermingled on the ONE production line. AND it was totally random, not like here were 20 Saabs, then 20 Boxters. The only separate areas were the body assembly and paint areas. After that, it was one line.
As for the SS, they were MY 2003 worldwide. The Old body 9-3 soldiered on as the 2003 convertible only. There was no "new" 9-3 convertible until Model year 2004, when production of the convertible moved to Austria.
