Congrats on the purchase! The Viggen really is a great car (minor flaws and all)... I'm not sure which direction you left Portland, but I've driven my Viggen through the canyons between Portland and Boise as well as the mountains between Portland and Sacramento. I mention this because I've also done those trips in a newer Audi and the Viggen comes out as the driver's car for sure! Even after 4 years of basically being an Audi fanatic, I still can't part ways with my Viggen and probably never will. It is just that much fun to drive.
As you're in a hot climate, I would suggest you consider a larger intercooler for your first upgrade. It really makes for consistent power delivery.
