My 1990 9000s - with 265K miles - is unfortunately becoming unreliable as a daily driver. She's exhibiting no crank, no start symptoms at random, is prone to overheat as the head gasket is starting to leak (first external, now internal), a/c system converted to R134 but leaking and miserable in TX summers, and interior trim parts and pieces are coming apart like crazy. I would still drive this car across the country, but I've been looking for a couple of years now for another Saab, something a little newer (up to 2002) that I could still work on.
I figured if I was going to buy a 9-3, I may as well get a Viggen... it was just a matter of finding the right one for the right price. Saabnet.com has saved me countless hours, countless dollars, countless sleepless nights. The last 16 years with this 9Ks have been a blessing thanks to the help and knowledge of everyone that posts here. I have replaced nearly everything except the engine proper, all with help here and there from saabnet.com. This car probably put me where I am today... as a service writer at a small shop.
Last week I drove a 2000 Viggen (150K) from Portland, Oregon back to Austin. Pre-purchase inspection (sold from private seller) done at Garry Small Saab in Portland, who I cannot recommend enough... they were absolutely wonderful. Before I left PDX, they changed the m/t fluid and re-sealed the upper timing cover. The car drove like a bat out of hell over the three day trip back to Texas.
The only quirks exhibited were... high beams inoperable while blasting down through the New Mexico high country night. Hitting the switch killed low beams and fog lights, which left me in the dark at high speed. Scary, scary, scary. The "orange relay" was the culprit. A/C stopped blowing cold as soon as I hit route 66. This made for a miserably warm 10+ hour drive through Texas into Austin. Will evac & recharge when I get back to work tomorrow, check for leaks. Right rear jack point cover was dangling by a lanyard when I pulled into the driveway... dirty, road-weary and smelly. Everything else was spot on... 2100 miles, 3 days. What a great car.
I transferred the hood badge from my 9000 to the Viggen today. Same fit. Shift of power. May I get to 265K on this one.
I look forward to posting, listening, lurking and keeping this car long-lasting here on the 9-3 board. Cheers to you all.
