(Issue discussed in last paragraph)
Car is 2001 Viggen with 43k miles.
Within the VIN range for headbolts issue. Drained coolant to be safe since I had to do another repair anyway. Did one bolt at a time, first to 44 ft/lbs then an additional 90 degree turn before moving on to the next. One pass through all of them (in a spiral-like order, as in the TSB) and I was finished.
Bolts 7 and 8 were the oiliest, 7 was the most of all. It had oil inside of the hole so what I did was to put in a small tube with a syringe and suck it out. Then, I placed cue tips with strings tied around them, pushed them into the hole with a new headbolt and cleaned the inside. This took several cue tips but eventually shining a light in, I saw it was clean. Also, none of my headbolts were loose at all. I mean, all of them seemed really tight. I would have probably been okay, but I did it anyway and everything should be to spec now.
Did all of the headbolts like that and finished pretty successfully. Still haven't started the car since I am waiting on one more part to change (the rubber piece chain guide under the valve cover) but I don't expect any problems.
Will report back when I start her back up.
One concern about this repair on another car: 2000 9-3 SE. Did this back in 2008. I do remember one bolt or two (probably bolt 7 and 8) to have oil inside the hole/chamber. I didn't do what I did today (syringe + tube and cue tips). Car has been fine, but obviously I can't really see from that part of the engine for any leaks anyway. Some coolant loss but no obvious way to tell if it's burning. Should I consider replacing those two bolts and doing the cleaning inside? I know fluids are not compressible so if there was any oil in there I fear it may have not allowed the bolt to hold the head to spec on that corner, unless it wasn't much oil and whatever was there made its way up some of the threads.
Thoughts appreciated
Bender
