If you live where the summers are hot and install a K&N cone filter, which can ingest hot air from under the hood, your power will be significantly reduced. You may be better off with a drop in K&N filter element, and modifying the stock air box is it has a restrictive tube that gets outside air.
I do not have any specific experience with your vehicle. You may be able to get good advise on the 9000 BB, or the performance BB.
It is easy to modify the NG900's with the trionic ECU. Earlier technologies require much more effort.
As a rule, you can probably go to an external controller, and set it to the stock boost pressure, using your boost indicator. This will make your engine much more responsive at the same pressure, and 1st and 2nd gear will be very fast.
With higher pressures, you need to keep the intake and exhaust restrictions low, use the best octane pump gas that is available, keep the spark plugs in tip top shape, perhaps reducing the gap sightly, keep injectors clean to prevent lean AF mixtures, keep the combustion chambers clean with techron concentrate. Change the fuel filter if over 100000 miles.
With the NG900's, you can increase the boost for $100. You can get the pressure up to the fuel cut pressure, 1bar. There fuel maps work perfect up there, and the injectors deliver enough fuel for wide open throttle at red line.
If there is an Abbott ECU mod for your year and model, then you can assume that you will not have any fueling problems as Abbott does not change the fuel pressures or injectors.
You will be substantially on your own cranking up the boost. I can provide some insight but no practical experience for your powerplant. I think that you can learn a lot. A $100 cost for the controller is not significant. You should be able to achieve significant improvements in driveability with little or modest increases in boost pressure.
