Kevin,
Seems like a lot either way based on my recent (last week) experience. The entire system ("cat back") consists of 3 parts (the flex joint, the center muffler/resonator, and the rear muffler) held together by 3 "clamshell" clamps (easy to get apart unlike the old "u-bolt" type - just twist off the rusty old bolts and toss the old clamp). Eeuroparts offers a kit which includes all 3 pieces, all the clamps, and even all new hangers for $369.99 (this is for my son's 2002 9-3 SE, so could be some variation among models)- the mufflers are Starla brand. Assuming a shop can get the parts for that same price and mark them up to maybe $500 with tax, I have a hard time seeing how they are going to need 4 hours of shop time ($100/hr) to put in on - I did it on jacks in the driveway in less time than that. So it looks to me like you are paying $500-$700 for the labor/avoidance of getting dirty, seems like a lot. Show your "trusty local" guy the eeuroparts page and tell him that $600 seems more fair - he should be able to put the car on a hoist and do the whole job in an hour.
Good luck!
Gary
