I have owned many Saabs with DI. One lasted 110,000 miles on a 1991 -9000 CD. The DI on my 1996 had no issues over 3 yrs/36,000 lease whatsoever. The DI on my wife's 1998 900 T CV lasted 21,000 miles. The Di on my 1999 9-3 HOT is perfect so far.
Hint: ALWAYS use NGK brand spark plugs.
The check engine light came on because the trionic system counts misfires. When a certain quantity is reached within a time frame ---BINGO--check engine light.
Install the NGK's regardless of the counter advice, and "Sales bins" of plugs.
